Over the years, Leander swimmers have established an extraordinary legacy of international success, largely due to Bobby Madine's pioneering coaching methods. Our club has proudly seen members represent their country at the highest levels, including the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, World Championships, and European Championships. Four outstanding Leander athletes — Andy Hunter (1972), Robbie Howard (1976), Marion Madine (1996) and Sycerika McMahon (2012) — reached the pinnacle of swimming by competing in the Olympic Games. Mark Millar, Marion and Sycerika also performed at World Championships, while an additional 19 club swimmers have competed at European and Commonwealth Games. This tradition of excellence continues with recent successes: Mollie McAlorum represented Northern Ireland at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, and Oliver Duffield competed in the 2023 Commonwealth Youth Games (Trinidad & Tobago) as part of the Northern Ireland triathlon team.
Today, with over 200 active members, Leander continues to thrive as an affiliated club with Swim Ireland and Swim Ulster. Bobby's scientific approach to training, which includes personalized training targets and lactate testing methods, remains central to our coaching philosophy. This blend of scientific rigor and supportive coaching has produced generations of successful swimmers. The club is officially registered with The Charity Commission for Northern Ireland (NIC102327) and is a member of Sported NI, reflecting our commitment to good governance and community development through sport.

Today, Leander is guided by a dedicated team of experienced coaches, passionate parents, and committed committee members who all share our founding vision of excellence and inclusivity. As a comprehensive swimming club, we provide a complete pathway for swimmers at every stage of development—from learn-to-swim programs for beginners through to high-performance training for those competing at national and international events. Having proudly celebrated our 60th anniversary in 2024, we honor our storied past while embracing the future, balancing our competitive heritage with our family-centered values. With strong community support and a clear vision, Leander Swimming Club continues to go from strength to strength, nurturing the next generation of swimming talent in Belfast and beyond.
